We stayed at Azulmaris in October 2025 – simply perfect! From the moment you arrive, you can feel the love and attention to detail. Adriana and Michael are incredibly warm, helpful, and always available – you immediately feel welcome and well cared for. The apartment is high-quality, tastefully decorated, and furnished with great care. Everything feels well thought out and beautifully maintained. The kitchen is fully equipped, the beds are super comfortable, and the bathroom is modern and spotless – you can tell that every detail has been considered. The location right by the sea is dreamy, with a terrace and views of the waves. Vila Chã is quiet, authentic, and only about 30 minutes from Porto – perfect for both relaxation and exploration. I can wholeheartedly recommend Azulmaris – it was one of the most wonderful stays we’ve ever had. Thank you, Adriana and Michael, for your warmth, helpfulness, and this little piece of paradise on the Atlantic! 🌊💙

Exploring Northern Portugal
Vila Chã
Staying in Vila Chã, you’re perfectly placed to discover the best of northern Portugal. The region offers a mix of natural beauty, history, culture, and plenty of options for activities. From coastal cliffs and quiet natural reserves to historic towns and vibrant cities, there’s always something worth exploring just a short drive away.

Vila do Conde
Start nearby in Vila do Conde, less than 20 minutes drive — a town that feels both historic and alive. Its cobbled streets are full of character, lined with small cafés, traditional shops, and a welcoming atmosphere. Highlights include the hilltop Santa Clara Monastery, the impressive aqueduct with nearly a thousand arches, and the Nau Quinhentista, a full-size replica of a 16th-century ship that recalls the town’s seafaring past.

Porto
Less than 30 minutes away is Porto, the capital of the north. Walking through the old streets, you’ll see façades covered in azulejo tiles, clothes hanging from balconies, and cafés filled with the smell of fresh coffee. Down by the Ribeira, the Douro shimmers against colorful houses and lively terraces, while just across the bridge in Gaia, the port wine cellars invite you to taste the drink that carries the city’s name. Porto is lively but never rushed, proud of its history yet always welcoming — a place that stays with you long after you leave.

Day trips less than an hour away
And if you wish to explore further, other historic cities are also within easy reach for a day trip: Braga, often called the “Rome of Portugal” for its churches and sanctuaries; Guimarães, the “birthplace of the nation”; Viana do Castelo, with sweeping views from Santa Luzia Basilica; and Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal,” with canals, colorful boats, and art nouveau houses. Each has its own charm, and whichever you choose, you really can’t go wrong.

Family activities
Families will also find plenty to enjoy. In Vila Nova de Gaia, the Zoo de Santo Inácio is the largest in northern Portugal, home to more than 800 animals and interactive experiences. In Porto, SEA LIFE fascinates children and adults alike with its underwater tunnels and feeding sessions, while Aquapark Amarante is a summer favorite with pools and slides for all ages. For a calmer day outdoors, Porto’s City Park — the largest in the country — is perfect for cycling, picnics, or simply letting the kids run free among lakes and wide green spaces.

Nature day trips
For those seeking adventure in nature, about 1h30 from Vila Chã lies the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a vast protected area of waterfalls tumbling into crystal-clear pools, granite peaks rising over green valleys, wild horses grazing freely, and mountain villages where time seems to stand still. Visitors often describe it as “magical” and unforgettable, whether hiking along peaceful trails, swimming in natural lagoons, or simply enjoying the silence of untouched nature. Further south, the Serra da Freita mountains reveal a different kind of beauty, with the dramatic Frecha da Mizarela waterfall and fascinating geological formations. Nearby, the Arouca Geopark is home to the famous Passadiços do Paiva, an 8 km walkway that follows the river through stunning scenery, and the Arouca 516 suspension bridge — one of the longest in the world, offering a thrilling view high above the canyon.
